To help explore the original questions around ‘what makes a healthy creative community?’ we asked artist Jonathan Baxter to look at ways of exploring the ideas through his practice.
Jonathan subsequently asked a number of other artists to consider their own ‘creative community’ and map their relationships – social, ecological and economic – both in Dundee and outwith the city. The artists are reflecting on what it means to survive as an artist in the city.
The title Mappa Dundee is a play on Mappa Mundi, a general term used to describe medieval European maps of the world. Popularly mistranslated as ‘map of the world,’ the correct translation is ‘cloth of the world’. Mappa = cloth. Mundi = world.
