Mappa Dundee is part of a wider research project entitled ‘Curating City and Space’ by Donna Holford-Lovell. In response to Donna’s primary research question, ‘what makes a healthy creative community?’, ten artists and one arts collective were commissioned to map their creative community over a five year period – four years prior and one year hence – to see what social, environmental and economic systems have, and perhaps will, sustain them.

Artists were selected strategically in order to cover various ‘sites’ within Dundee. These ‘sites’ include DCA, DJCAD, GENERATORprojects, HMC, Roseangle Studios, Tin Roof Collective, and WASPS. Inevitably this selection is limited and different artists – unrelated in these ‘sites’ – would have mapped the city in different ways. Nevertheless, it is hoped that these singular and collective ‘maps’ reveal something about what it takes to sustain a visual arts practice within Dundee – even if that means travelling elsewhere or finally leaving the city.

The ‘maps’ are presented here as a GENERATORprojects Take-Over exhibition. The opening event is staged as a ‘live interpretation’ in which visitors are invited to interpret the ‘maps’ as best they can, whilst having the artists on hand to offer additional cartographical guidance when needed.

Mappa Dundee is curated by Jonathan Baxter as part of On Site Projects, a zone three activity for A+E.
